Learning to cast from the SUP. Today was the first time I didn't fall in!

Edited to add: double-hauling in 15-20 mph winds, too!

What’s everyone’s favorite wt rod and setup for crappie?

For bass and bluegill (almost the same as crappie), I use an 8' 6-wt Grey's GR50 with an English Orvis Clearwater click/pawl (built by Hardy, I believe) reel, and 6-wt Scientific Anglers Warmwater Redfish line. The GR50 is now the Fenwick Aetos.

    I’ve been using mostly a MaxCatch 8’ glass 5 wgt. Sometimes, I use the 7’ 4/5 or 7’6” 5/6 CGR.

I just got the 6’6” 4 wgt CGR. I haven’t put it into action yet, but plan on it soon.

I haven’t felt the need to put on an indicator yet. Most of the time, I’m just tossing over a balanced leech and bringing it slow through the zone at the present in my lake which is in about 2-4 feet of water.

I’m just fishing off the dock when I get Crappie, but I’d be using the same set ups out of the boat. The balanced leeches are pretty streamlined and not heavy. The 1/8” tungsten bead on them doesn’t really weigh much so the 5 weight easily casts it. The Crappie I’m getting get up towards a pound and a half, but most are closer to a pound.

I’m generally fishing for whatever instead of just Crappie. That 4/5, 5, 5/6 weight rod is my favorite out on the lake. Enough rod to cast medium sized streamers a reasonable fishing distance and not too much rod for most of the fish.

I almost only use a 4 wt (Greys Streamflex 8'6" rod) for crappie and gills. Been killing 12-14" crappie with a John Montana hybrid carp fly. Two days ago caught 30 crappie, six gills and a ten inch largemouth bass in less than 1.5 hours. Great fun!

How stable is that SUP in waves and wind? On busy weekends, the saltwater around my area (Clearwater to Tarpon Springs) is loaded with boaters and they can create some significant wave action. That, plus wind has lessened my interest in an SUP. Your SUP looks like it could be a lot of fun in calm water.

Probably won't see one of them till mid-April, Mike. It will depend on how cold March is up here. Still I've got lots of flies to tie. Soon it will look like this. And I'll do my happy dance.

Beautiful morning in West central Florida. Had good crappie action again. Ended the morning with 25 of them plus 8 gills and a ten inch LMB. I grew up in ND and ice fished to survive winters, but I much prefer this kind of winter.
