Tried the South end of Lake Tarpon today with a 4 wt glass rod. Great temperatures but had to deal with on and off wind gusts. Managed to find a gill hangout and caught ten. With the gills, I also caught two crappie and two bass. The most exciting fish was a 15 inch crappie that just nailed the fly.

The lake is full of gators and they always disappear as you approach. For the first time ever, as I was catching the gills, a gator decided to come closer to check things out. Got within 30 feet of me and just hovered there for the longest time. Then must have got bored and cruised off.

On my way back to the launch site, I saw something sticking out of the water that from a distance looked like the end of a lawn sprinkler head. I pick up any trash I pass just because it drives me nuts to see it in the water. Turns out is was a one piece G. Loomis spinning rod with only the butt end sticking out of the water. Looks like the reel stem broke off, as the bottom is still in the reel seat. The cork is badly chewed up, but the rest of the rod looks great. Looked it up and it's a $270 rod. Now I'm wondering if the butt end can be replaced at a reasonable price.

Interesting day to say the least.

Happy to catch these Easter fish on the fly. They ate a sinking spider I tied up over the winter.
I had 2 or 3 more crappies that came off as I was stripping them in.
