Default Bluegills are pure joy on a fly rod!

I left my pontoon home today because with these "severe" storms I don't want to be caught way out in a big lake when the lightning hits! And also for the pure joy of wet wading the shoreline with a 3wt. That is the ultimate fishing thrill IMHO!

I caught a bunch of bluegills, and a few small yellow perch. Even in mid afternoon the 'gills will smack a sponge spider or any nymph you put near them. This is why I love fly fishing for bluegills so much!

Most productive fly was a beadhead nymph (micro bugger). A lot of the 'gills were 8"+ which is kinda strange for July!

I love to catch blue gills. I can almost always rely on them if nothing else is biting.

I've just recently taken up bluegill fishing on my fly gear. In a way it's admitting defeat for me but I'm learning to enjoy it. I'd much rather I had the time to chase brookies or browns but I'll take what I can get these days. The collection of 4 wts that I have is wonderful for bluegill wrangling!

Awesome! Ive found that bluegills and sunfish are much more aggressive than bass for topwater flies around here. I need a 3wt to make it more fun to catch them. They are small but can put up a good fight. Try some small poppers or sliders.

Good luck! What color/size buggers do you use? and how do you strip them?
