I'm trying to make the switch from fly fishing for trout to bass. I'll be fishing a smallmouth creek, 100-200cfs, clear and shallow. I use a 7'6" 3wt orvis superfine carbon for my trout fishing. It's a light, moderate action rod. I tried a 8' 6" 5wt today and I didn't like it. Too much swing weight to be fun for me. So I either need to figure out a way to make my 3 wt work or just use my spinning rod.
So I have a couple of questions. I just stumbled across something called micro Skagit and it looks like maybe it will allow me to cast streamers easier with my 3wt? I'm still trying to figure out exactly what it is. I haven't found a good description yet. It looks like the idea is the same as a WF line where the head is thicker, only taken to the extreme.
Another question is will a faster 3 wt rod be able to cast more streamer weight compared to a slower action rod?
I guess my question is basically how can I setup a 7' 6" 3wt rod to maximize its ability to cast a heavier fly? Obviously there's a limit but I'm hoping there's ways to be able to throw a little more weight.
