Default Lower Provo River, UT - 03/30/2013

Excellent Baetis hatch on the lower Provo today upstream of the tunnel. Low, clear water and bright skies made for some beautiful trout observations (feeding, rising, fighting). The wind was a bit of a pain as it was swirling in the canyon all afternoon, other than that... great day to get out and enjoy this great sport (and a LOT of people were doing just that).

Baetis started popping around 2:25p and lasted until after 4:00p (kind of sporadic, off - on - off - back on)... started out taking fish on a #18 BWO soft hackle and then switched over to a #18 olive Comparadun.

Nice, fat Rainbow was the first to come to the net this afternoon.

    Pretty fish today...

Just a gorgeous day to be out... they're holding back in the reservoirs though... I believe the flow was in the range of 90-100 CFS. This little pool/tailout was very productive.

Check out the white edges on this Brownie!

...and there he (or she) goes.

    Tight lines!

Incredible action continues on the Lower Provo... water is still very low and clear, and the trout are trained on Baetis. We got to the river late last night (work getting in the way again), fished from 6:15p to almost 8:00p... put 7 in the net, shook off another 5-6... all on #18 Baetis soft hackle.

My buddy - The Rookie - landed 2, lost 2... he was pretty happy for his first time on the river. Nothing huge - all 11-13 inches - but full of fight.

Constant surface activity and nobody else around... cool beans.

That fly would be awesome on my Tenkara :-) Great pictures and colors. Thanks for posting those. I will be back out there soon enough! But, for now, the pictures work.

Absolutely Joni, although yesterday's 20-30 mph sustained winds would have presented some additional challenges with the Tenkara rod.

I fished downstream of the R/R bridge (above the tunnel) from 2:30p to 4:30p and the Baetis hatch was one for the ages. Even the duns that did get off the water were quickly slammed back down by the crazy winds and the trout were in a feeding frenzy. What a weird scene to see these Baetis duns cart-wheeling upstream on the surface like tiny tumble weeds.

I took several nice 'bows, a couple browns, and even a (bonus?) whitefish about 20" long.

I had to bag it around 4:30p as my fingers were just numb. In fact I hooked my last fish (~15" brown) left-handed while blowing on my right hand to warm it up!
