Thread: Southwestern Trout Wander

    Default Southwestern Trout Wander

My brother got back from a deployment so we took nine days to circle the Southwest. We showed up in Durango after doing zero research to find most rivers obviously blown out. A little disappointed we spent one day on the Delores and then diverted the CO time to a couple more days on the San Juan. Fishing was excellent as usual and surprisingly few crowds. From there we had our wives meet us at Lee's Ferry and spent a couple days with a jet boat up river.

Overall an awesome trip living out of the back of a Ford, sustaining off dehydrated food bags and trail mix. Below is a quick video I made of the trip.

    He SD,

First, a big thank you to your brother for his service.

Haven’t seen your video yet, but….
You two were on one of my favorite loops in America. We love the southwest, the people, the culture, the land itself and the trout that are found there.

Longing to be there right now, TT

SD: First off, a "Big Thank You" goes to your brother for his service to our country!

I really enjoyed the video, very nice work indeed. I see you had a great trip on the San Juan, congrats. Hard to believe you hit it when the crowds were down, that is always a plus. I've never fished Lee's Ferry, is the jet boat worth the price or would you recommend just wading?

Thanks guys, it's definitely a great area.

First time we did the San Juan was in January and it wasn't to crowded even though it was over New Years. This time was early May and I think there were actually less people there. The fly shops told us it dies down every year through the month of May for some reason. We would get up early and fish for hogs up by the dam then move down river when people started showing up. We were pretty stoked to have big sections all to ourselves.

    Larry,

I would spend the money on the Jet Boat at least once. Up river really is an amazing place to fish. Last couple trips seems like we are averaging smaller fish and most of them this trip seemed a little thin to me. The local guides said they are getting plenty of healthy fish though so it might have just been the window we hit.

The walk in holds plenty of fish but you can rent a boat from Cliff Dwellers (good guys at the shop) for about $200. If you go mid week you can get huge stretches all to yourself and the scenery is really incredible. The average fish is smaller in my opinion compared to a lot of rivers but its probably the prettiest canyon I've ever fished.

Wow! Great video and looks like an even better trip. What a great way to welcome your brother home. The boat and canyon looked amazing, thanks for posting it.

ps you should submit that to the Orvis Friday Fly Fishing Film Festival, I think a lot of people would enjoy seeing it.

Durango is definitely back on our hit list. Awesome town and a lot of water we would like to explore when water levels are a little more agreeable.
