    Default Road Trip Advice

Going to be visiting Yellowstone NP in late September.

In lieu of driving 16 hours straight, we're making a stop somewhere along the route.

Are there any opportunities between Provo, UT and Idaho Falls, ID where one can find both lodging and somewhere to flog the water with some fly line that's not too far off from the 15?

    Thanks in advance.

[ On Edit: Sorry, shadow perhaps I misread your post. You don't mention that Provo is your starting point. My error.] I'm a bit puzzled shadow. Although there are some stopping places along your route, I'm not sure I see the "16 hours" on the road. Since you mention Idaho Falls, it looks like you'll be going into YNP from the west, i.e. W. Yellowstone MT which is only 360 miles, more or less, from Provo.

    Am I missing something?

Otherwise, my only experience (and it was a good one) along your route is the Blackfoot River north of Soda Springs.

    flygwn,

Thanks for the advice. It's been the last detail of my trip I needed to lock down before making that drive.

A friend of mine from SoCal hooked it up with some addresses of private waters where I can wet my line.

Apparently, all it requires is a knock on the door, a handmade apple pie and a hand shake to fish some waters that guides fish that are private. Go figure.

It takes about 5.5 hours or so to drive from Salt Lake to West Yellowstone.

The Provo River isn't too far from I 15. You can access the Provo River by heading east on 800 North in Orem Utah.

I am from Utah. I fish a lot of our local waters. I guess if it were me, I'd just want to get to Yellowstone as soon as possible...the fishing is a lot better up near the park. I wouldn't take time away from fishing around YNP to fish in Northern Utah.

Do you like small streams or larger rivers?

There are some nice little rivers that flow in and out of Pineview Resevoir...the Ogden River and South Fork of the Ogden. But...again...compared to Island Park or YNP...I wouldn't take the time to fish them.

    smoothie,

larger rivers would be something completely out of my comfort zone, considering our largest river in SoCal is a 4 hour drive. Smaller streams is something I'd be able to adjust more readily for.

This is the first time somebody has told me to head to YNP, considering I had the Henry's Fork around Ashton as a possible pit stop before the home stretch to the NE corner of the park.

All I know is that there's no way I can make that drive from LA to Cooke City in one day, and there's way too many squiggly blue lines on the way that I can possibly fish.

I'll keep doing research, altho it seems that I've got a good idea where I want to be during that first day.
