Default Strawberry Reservoir, Utah - 06/08/2018

Burned a PTO day on Friday and arrived to perfect conditions at one of the best Cutthroat fisheries in the West - Strawberry Reservoir:

Water was 53* F when I launched the tube and birds already skimming midges off the surface along with the usual "slurping" of large trout gorging themselves. Despite the activity I struck out during the chironomid hatch. Decided to rig up the intermediate rod with an olive Estaz Bugger and my Callibaetis Drifter assuming that mayflies would be on the menu... and it was ON after that! By noon there were mayfly nymphs everywhere just under the surface (no duns though?) and the action was steady until I knocked off around 1:30. Great fun fighting fish in clear water... lots of Wicked Tuna references!

This Rainbow went airborne immediately... pulled off 3 cartwheels before peeling all the line off my reel.

Fat, healthy fish... the fertility of Strawberry is just off the charts.

Here are the two (2) flies that took em all... Bugger on the dropper, Calli trailing 2ft behind.

After a very hot couple of months, the harbingers of Autumn are slowly creeping in. Two of those being shorter days, and cooler nights... both combining to drop the water temps at Strawberry back into the low 60s (and dropping). As a result, the trout are returning to the shallows from a summer in the abyss!

Went after some cutthroat yesterday, I think it was too late in the season. They were very lethargic. I saw some pretty fishy areas around the soldier creek damn, but the fish would lazily follow the streamers I was throwing and occasionally nibble the tail. The wind was almost completely unbearable, but I was able to make it work. I got three good strikes, but only got one to net. I had the best luck at the end of this natural pier right above the Utah state engineer marker.
