I'm a senior in high school right now. I'm going to college this fall in Dillon, MT. Going to be within biking distance of the Beaverhead and driving distance of the Jefferson, Big Hole, Wise, Missouri, etc. I'm going to college for a major in biology with a focus on wildlife ecology. In the summers I am going to try and get internships in Montana and Alaska spend my time fishing when not working. After college, I might either live the trout bum life for awhile or go right into getting a masters in wildlife biology.

Definitely not going to guide after I graduate college after all I got a degree in a field for a reason to get a job in that field. I hope to be able to go fishing/ mountain biking more than I do now in my final semester. This summer I am going to AK for 2 weeks to see my uncle and have some fishing adventures. After that I'm not sure where life will take me no job lined up yet or even an interview yet but we will see in the coming months.

I'm hoping to guide during college to help pay, and I am thinking about going into a fisheries biology program with an emphasis on conservation of native species.

    Hi creekcrawler,

I'll guess from your screen name that you like small streams. I spent my days crawling a few myself. Welcome to the forum and I hope you'll stay with us for years to come.

If I can make a suggestion as an old F^%( .

What ever you do and where ever you go, do as I did and take my dad's suggestion. Don't ever get in debt to anyone or anything and pace your life to what you can afford.

Buy a car you can afford to pay cash and nurse it. Buy a house which you can improve and improve it.

Don't give up your day job to pursue a dream, use the day job to finance your dream and become the best you can at it.

Spend as I did, four hours a day (the same as you would spend in college) learning by reading, education pursuits, experimenting or something else seven days a week.

Along with that, follow the golden rule and treat others as you would have them treat you (I would add with an experienced lawman's view, watch for false prophets)

Do that and you will do well.

Many years ago I wonderful man, Gary Loomis tapped me on the shoulder at a fly casting exhibition I was giving and said, "I want you to work for me" That was one of the greatest days of my life

You never know when that day may come nor who that man who has a flat tire might be, so treat people decently and with respect.

Do that and you will live well

Learn more about history, environment (we called it conservation) and ethics and God will bless you.

I just finished school about two months ago using an online program to finish faster. I get out at least 3 or 4 times a week, even more depending how everything is going. But I live in michigan so everyone knows how it is this time of the season. Let me tell you, this is my first winter steelheading season and its kicking my ass. I havent had a fish even take or bump my fly since december. I have been swinging flies tho. Guiding hasn't really peeked my intrest but what has is bamboo rod building. Im taking a class from bill oyster down in blue ridge georgia and I cant wait. Id love to make them for a living. After the class I gotta talk to some local rod makers. Me and my bros are planning a isle royale trip in the summer and I cant wait for giant prehistoric pike on the end of my line.
